Sun Tunnel Skylight Project Toronto
A sun tunnel brought natural daylight into a windowless Toronto hallway, no major construction, no light shaft to build, just a bright, natural glow through a discreet ceiling diffuser, installed in half a day.
Not every room can take a full skylight. A hallway boxed in by upstairs rooms, an interior bathroom, a closet, or a stairwell often has no direct roof access above it, and no space for the light shaft a conventional skylight needs. That’s exactly where a sun tunnel shines: it captures daylight at the roof and pipes it down through a highly reflective tube to a ceiling diffuser below.
This Toronto sun tunnel project shows how we bring natural light into spaces a standard skylight simply can’t reach, with far less construction, far less disruption, and a surprisingly bright result for such a compact, tidy installation.
The Challenge
The homeowners had a dark central hallway with no windows and no room for a conventional skylight and light shaft. It needed artificial light around the clock, even on the brightest summer days, and it made that whole part of the home feel dim and cave-like.
They wanted a brighter, more natural feel without the cost and mess of major renovation, a way to get daylight into a spot that seemed impossible to light naturally.
The Homeowner’s Goals
They wanted genuine natural daylight in the hallway, not just another light fixture, something that would make the space feel open and connected to the outdoors.
They also wanted it done without the expense, construction, and disruption of a full skylight, something clean, quick, and low-impact.
Our Solution
We installed a VELUX sun tunnel: a small dome on the roof captures daylight, channels it down a highly reflective rigid tube, and delivers it to a sleek ceiling diffuser that spreads the light evenly across the hallway. The reflective tube loses very little light along the way, so even a compact unit delivers a genuinely bright result.
Because there’s no large opening and no light shaft to frame and drywall, the whole installation is dramatically less invasive than a conventional skylight, most of the work is a small roof opening and a neat ceiling fitting.
Our Step-by-Step Approach
1. Assessment & Placement
We assessed the roof and the ceiling cavity above the hallway and planned the shortest, most efficient tube path between them. The straighter and shorter the run, the more daylight reaches the room, so this planning directly determines how bright the result will be.
We confirmed there was a clear route for the tube through the ceiling cavity, avoiding wiring, ducts, and framing.
2. Roof & Ceiling Openings
We cut the small roof and ceiling openings the sun tunnel needs, far smaller and less invasive than the large opening a full skylight requires. This is a big part of why sun tunnels are so quick and tidy to install.
The compact openings mean minimal disruption to both the roof and the ceiling below.
3. Tube Routing & Flashing
We routed the highly reflective tube between the two openings and installed the factory flashing around the roof dome so the assembly stays completely watertight. The roof dome is flashed with the same care as any skylight, a small opening still has to be sealed properly.
Proper flashing here is what ensures a sun tunnel never becomes a leak point, despite its small footprint.
4. Diffuser Installation
We fitted the ceiling diffuser, which spreads the captured daylight evenly across the hallway and looks like a clean, modern light fixture rather than a hole in the ceiling.
We checked the light output and confirmed the tube was delivering a bright, even glow to the space below.
5. Finishing & Cleanup
We finished the ceiling neatly around the diffuser and cleaned up thoroughly, the whole job done in about half a day, with none of the mess a full skylight would create.
The homeowners were left with a bright hallway and a home that looked untouched apart from the new source of daylight overhead.
The Result
The once-dark hallway now glows with natural daylight through a discreet ceiling diffuser, no light switch needed during the day, where before it was dark around the clock.
All of it was achieved in half a day, with minimal disruption and a fully watertight roof. For a space everyone had assumed couldn’t be lit naturally, the transformation genuinely surprised the homeowners.
Products & Materials
A VELUX sun tunnel comprising a roof dome, a highly reflective rigid tube, a ceiling diffuser, and factory flashing for a watertight roof seal. The reflective tube is the clever part, it carries daylight down with very little loss, which is why such a small, tidy installation can brighten a whole hallway. The roof dome is flashed to the same standard as any skylight.
Why Toronto Homeowners Trust TSI
Sun tunnels are the smart way to light rooms a full skylight can’t reach, but the tube routing and the roof flashing still have to be done right. We plan the most efficient light path to maximise brightness and flash the roof dome properly to keep it watertight.
That combination of thoughtful routing and proper weatherproofing is what gives you maximum daylight and zero leaks from a compact, low-disruption installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sun tunnel skylight?
A sun tunnel captures daylight through a small roof dome and channels it down a highly reflective tube to a ceiling diffuser, bringing natural light to spaces that can’t take a full skylight.
It’s ideal for interior hallways, bathrooms, closets, and stairwells, anywhere without direct roof access for a conventional unit.
Where do sun tunnels work best?
Anywhere that can’t take a full skylight, interior hallways, bathrooms, closets, stairwells, and similar spaces without direct roof access above them.
They deliver a surprising amount of brightness for their small size, which is why they’re such a good fit for those otherwise-impossible-to-light rooms.
Is installing a sun tunnel disruptive?
Much less than a full skylight. The roof and ceiling openings are small, and there’s no light shaft to frame and drywall, so most sun tunnels are installed in about half a day with minimal mess. It’s one of the least disruptive ways to add natural light to a home.
Will a sun tunnel leak?
No, the roof dome is installed with a proper factory flashing kit, so it’s just as watertight as any well-installed skylight. A small opening still has to be sealed correctly, and we flash the sun tunnel dome with the same care we’d give a full skylight, so there’s no compromise on weatherproofing.
